The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China

TOne of the most significant parts of our journey was our exploration of ancient civilizations. We visited Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa in Pakistan sites considered the cradle of one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Walking among the ruins, we felt transported back thousands of years. Our guide’s account was particularly memorable; he spoke of history with such passion, as if the inhabitants of these cities had abandoned them only a few days earlier. Thanks to such people, history comes alive and takes on a completely different feel.

Our travels also took us to Gobustan National Park in Azerbaijan, where we studied ancient petroglyphs and observed a unique natural phenomenon mud volcanoes. This region is home to over 300 of the world’s 700 known mud volcanoes, making it one of the most unusual geological sites on Earth.
Nature has always held a special place in our travels. One of the most memorable experiences was flying over the majestic Pakistani ranges the Himalayas, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush and the view of K2 and the Baltoro Glacier. When we first saw K2 from the plane window, the cabin was completely silent for a few seconds. Enormous peaks capped with eternal snow towered before us, and at that moment, we were acutely aware of how vast and beautiful our world is.
We also visited the Deosai Plains one of the highest plateaus in the world, often called the “Land of Giants.” This place amazes with its silence, endless expanses, and a sense of complete freedom. Equally unforgettable was the trip to Skardu, known for its dramatic landscapes, ancient rock art, and incredible natural beauty. In Skardu, we stayed at the famous Shangrila Hotel. One day, my husband and I accidentally wandered into someone else’s garden and started eating apples straight from the tree. Instead of being disgruntled, the host greeted us with a smile and genuine hospitality. The taste of these apples unexpectedly reminded me of my childhood in Baku they were just as sweet and aromatic. This moment became a symbol for me of how memories can connect different countries, cultures, and people.
Our travels also took us to the world’s most famous landmarks. We walked along the Great Wall of China, marveled at the grandeur of the Roman Colosseum, immersed ourselves in the world of art at the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and watched the sunset at the Acropolis in Athens a moment when history and beauty seem to merge. Particularly memorable were the stories our guide told in Athens, who spoke with such love of ancient Greek culture, making the Acropolis seem not just a monument of the past, but a living part of history.
We also saw modern symbols of peace from the inspiring Statue of Liberty in New York to the atmosphere of joy and childhood dreams at Disneyland Paris.
Our travels were filled not only with beauty but also with adventure. We rode camels in the deserts of Dubai and Karachi, watched lions on safari and even flew in small planes.
But the journey wasn’t always easy. We survived an 18-hour drive from Islamabad to Karachi, heavy monsoon rains, and even an avalanche in the Alps. These challenges tested our resilience, but they made our travels even more valuable and memorable.
One of the most interesting aspects of travel for us has always been discovering local cuisine and traditions. By trying unusual dishes and interacting with people, we better understand the culture of each country. One of our fondest memories was drinking tea with a Pakistani family. We were welcomed like family with genuine kindness, respect, and warmth. It’s moments like these that make you realize that travel isn’t just about discovering new places, but also about human connections.
As we traveled the world, we noticed how different people’s traditions, cuisine, and lifestyles are. But we were especially touched by the similarities between Azerbaijan and Pakistan. In both countries, people are distinguished by their sincere hospitality, respect for family and a warm attitude towards guests.
It’s encounters like these that make travel truly valuable and leave a mark on the heart.
Over time, we realized that travel changes a person. It teaches patience, kindness, curiosity, and helps us see the world from a broader perspective. Each trip leaves behind not only photographs but also internal changes that stay with us forever.
