Priene, Miletus & Didyma

Priene, Miletus & Didyma

Situated near each other in Turkey’s Aydın Province, Priene and Miletus represent two pivotal ancient Greek city-states that were integral to the Ionian League. These neighboring sites, frequently explored in conjunction with the nearby Didyma oracle, provide a fascinating comparison. Priene is renowned for its remarkably intact, compact Hellenistic urban design, seemingly untouched by later development. In contrast, Miletus was a vast and historically influential port city, recognized as the birthplace of Western philosophical thought. Both cities suffered a similar fate: their once-vibrant Aegean harbors, crucial for their economies, were gradually choked by sediment from the Meander River over centuries. Now, they are situated far inland, surrounded by level farmland.
